Solution

Web server logs, such as access or error logs, keep growing and can consume a lot of disk space. That's why they are "rotated". The current log file is renamed to an archive file and compressed. In this process, the last octet of the IP addresses is anonymized to fulfill the requirements of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The log file is then empty and will be filled with further entries.

When exactly files are rotated usually depends on the size of the file. You can also specify that files should always be rotated daily, weekly or monthly - regardless of their size. In addition, you can specify how many archive files should be kept. If the maximum value is reached, the oldest archive is deleted, so that at most the number of archive files you specify remains. Finally, you can specify whether the archive files are to be compressed (recommended setting) or saved without compression.

A common setting is to rotate files when they are 10 MB or larger, and to keep a maximum of 10 previous versions of the archives.

To change the protocol rotation,

1. Log in to the webspace control panel.

2. Click the "Websites & Domains" tab.

3. Click the "Log files" icon for the domain you want to configure.

4. From the log file drop-down list in the upper right corner, which by default shows "All logs", select "Manage log files".

5. Click on the "Log rotation" button.

6. Make the settings you want and save them with the "OK" button.
